Classic - Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet with his friend, Colonel Pickering, that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party. He believes by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he feels, is impeccable speech, Eliza can indeed fool the garden party crowd. Beyond the outcome of the bet the play addresses love, independence, and ego as Eliza changes in ways that exceed expectations.
